Call to Action!

The great and beloved scripture of India, the Bhagavad Gita, is a call to action: right action. In the inspired and immortal dialogue between Lord Krishna (God & Guru) and his disciple Arjuna (soul & ego), we are called to action, to stand and  be counted, to battle the lower forces within us (which  tempt us to live by desire and ego affirmation) with the power of the unbeatable, divine forces of God, guru, and soul. Periodically in the history of nations, the forces of light and darkness wage their unceasing struggle on a stage larger than that of the lives of separate individuals.

Our nation, and indeed the nations of this earth, face challenges the like of which have never been encountered in recorded history and the solution to which requires commitment and cooperation on a global scale. In addition to economic and ecological challenges there are forces which reject a global and inclusive perspective and actively seek to destroy this emerging consciousness in whatever form it manifests.

As the year 2009 dawns, we face a new and uncertain chapter in history. There are great minds and compassionate hearts working for positive solutions around the world in all areas of human activity, from science and the arts, politics, education, industry, and finance, to spirituality and religion. Ananda is working in the realm of consciousness and spirituality. Here in the greater Seattle area, Ananda’s work includes the East West Bookshops, Ananda Community, and the Living Wisdom School of Seattle. We believe that the changes so urgently needed in our world today can only happen through the awakened conscience and higher consciousness of individuals around the world. There exists no single military, economic, scientific, or political force which alone can impose change without individual initiative and the cooperation of millions of people worldwide. In this dawning age of individual initiative linked to power of universally available knowledge , “We”, as Mahatma Gandhi put it so well, “must be the change we seek”.

Thus the work of Ananda, and that of millions of truth seekers around the world, is to uplift and awaken higher consciousness at this crucial moment in human history. Behind the outer form of Ananda is the power and grace of a line of Self-realized masters whose role in humanity’s upliftment was established many millennia ago.

We invite you therefore to approach challenges, both personal and global, with faith founded upon an inner life of meditation and devotion, and expressed courageously, creatively, and cooperatively with others of like mind. Self-transformation begins with us and takes committed, personal effort. It finds support through Divine grace and through fellowship with others. As it flowers within, it expands outward in service to others.

At the East West Bookshops we express an appreciation and understanding of the underlying truth behind all forms of truth-seeking. For those working on staff at the stores, we have an opportunity to learn how to see work as service and to integrate successful work habits and skills with high ideals, learning how to cooperate and how to be true friends.

At the Living Wisdom School of Seattle, we seek to guide the new generation of children to express their highest potential by balancing feeling, intelligence, imagination, spiritual consciousness, and physical development to achieve true happiness and a sustainable lifestyle in the global village of Earth.

At Ananda and the Institute of Living Yoga we learn, practice, and share the practical disciplines of meditation and yoga, including raja, hatha and kriya yoga practices. At Ananda Community we seek to live these high ideals with simplicity, cooperation, moderation and divine friendship. Ananda Community offers a new form of modern “ashram,” which sees renunciation in terms of ego transcendence (rather than traditional monasticism). Residents there come from all walks of life.

Whether you are new to Ananda or a life-long member participating through service, support, study, fellowship, and meditation, we invite you to deepen your attunement through this ray of the divine light. The greatest protection we can have in this world of uncertainty comes from divine attunement, and that, in turn, comes most strongly in active association with others.

The challenges of these times are great opportunities for us to serve and grow in a divine way.

Blessings to all, and our prayers for an inspired New Year!

Do You Know Your Neighbor at Sunday Service?

Have you ever been curious who that cheerful smiling person sitting beside you at Sunday service is? Or who is emanating that blissful energy when you meditate in a group? We’re assembling a “Ananda Sangha and Friends” Bulletin Board with pictures of folks who frequent the Temple. We are inviting you to participate. For your convenience, there are two easy ways to do so:

  1. Send us your picture (via email to contact@anandaseattle.org). We’d like a photo of your face for easy recognition. It should be of resolution 300 dpi or better.
  2. Let us take your picture. We’ll have some times announced after Sunday Service. In January, 2009, those will be January 11th and January 25th.  Your photographer will be Chandi Holliman.

Thanks, we’re looking forward to all of us knowing each other’s names.

Family Ministry needs YOU!

The Ananda Family Ministry needs YOU. Can you help us with reading a story during Sunday School? Holding a child’s hand going up and down the stairs, singing chants, lighting candles, meditating with young children, gluing, cutting or pasting?

This is a 40 minute direct experience while working with Divine Mother. These children will inspire you.

Here is a quote from one of the newest Sunday School helpers:

“The thing that stands out to me is the creative, fun ways we bring the message to the kids.  The activities tend to be as engaging to me as they are for the kids.”

“There are many lessons for a devotee in helping with the children.  The two most important ones for me recently have been noticing first of all, how quickly the children respond to non-verbal, loving energy.  When I feel really centered and open in my heart, the children are calmer too. They really act like little mirrors and are eager to cooperate and show their best side.  The second lesson has been acceptance backed up with prayer.  If the children are acting out or there is a situation happening that calls for an “adult” decision, first taking a deep breath, doing my best not to judge (acceptance) and then asking Master for help can bring a solution much more quickly.  Once I hear that inner answer, it has been much easier to be lovingly firm with the children and I have found they accept what I am saying.  If I am off center and inwardly unsure, they seem to know it and the acting out can go on longer. I feel really happy when I’ve been able to ask Master for help and together we have helped a child have a good experience.”

Meditation Tips – January 2009

One of the techniques we teach and use in our meditation practice is to watch the breath. This simple practice gives us something on which to focus our attention, drawing it more and more inward.  The emphasis is on being the observer, to watch the breath, and not to control it in any way.  A little different emphasis was given by Yogananda as told to Swami Kriyananda and related in the book, Conversations with Yogananda, as follows:

“When watching the breath, I’ve previously taught not to control its flow. I wanted to tell you today, however, that that flow may be controlled to this extent: Between each breath, try, for that brief moment, to deepen the sense of release you feel from the need to breathe. Gradually, by natural degrees, those pauses will increase in length. You may, if you like, teach the technique this way to others.”

Spiritualizing Our Consciousness Regarding Money

Paramhansa Yogananda said, “Making money honestly and industriously to serve Thy work is the next greatest art after the art of realizing Thee.” Tithing spiritualizes our consciousness toward money, helping us to experience God’s presence more completely in all aspects of our lives. It also allows God to use us as instruments for his work in this world.

This is a true story of an Ananda devotee regarding the value of tithing to him personally. It is a great illustration of starting to tithe at a level you feel comfortable with and receiving an inward assurance that it was the right thing to do:

“When I came to Ananda, I was an in-debt carpenter and tithing was the last thing I thought I could afford to do. For the next two and a half years, I consciously donated to this and that but didn’t tithe and barely kept afloat financially. One day a story that one of the ministers told about tithing intrigued me and prompted me to try it. Even though I was flat broke, I gave a tithe from my next paycheck. My checks did not bounce that pay period even though I thought they surely would. Well, no big windfalls happened, no huge amounts of money came to me, but after I began tithing, I always seemed to have enough. Things stopped financially going wrong and eventually I even turned back a pay raise because I simply had enough money and didn’t need it!” – EG
